Check out this alevin! You can see its eye in the lower left and the yolk sac quite clearly! This picture was taken by a former student using a digital microscope with a 50x lens at Erma Stephenson Elementary.

    A note from James Ardiel:

First of all....everything is going along just great here. :) We have only lost one, and she/he was sick when they arrived. I do have a questions about the ATU's for our eggs. We are now beyond our 450, more like 485 and we still don't see any action. I know the 450 is an estimate, but I am curious to know if anyone else that got delievered in January are hatching.

I'm Yvonne from White Rock Elementary. As long as you still see development in the eggs, I wouldn't worry much... 450 is just an estimate as you say! re: my eggs - not january arrivals but december - I was keeping them at 7 and 8 degrees. We lost a quite a number of eggs - 16 (Bob said we likely would due to some problem this year with little campbell supply). All are now swim up fry with no alevin deaths and only one poor little fry who swam in circles and wasn't able to swim up and inflate his swim bladder (I call him Lefty and 'set him free' over the weekend)...

      All the best, Yvonne

Hi there, Nicole from Cloverdale Traditional. No action in our tank either. We are at 489 ATUs today with not a single hatch yet. We lost three eggs so far with one being the first day (so gone when we got it). My students are so excited for the hatch but nothing is happening! All of my eggs look great though so I guess we just wait...

So far so good over here. We have lost 2 eggs (one of which was sick when it arrived). We are experiencing the same thing as Ardiel. Our ATUs are at 494 and the eggs still look a long way off from hatching.

  4. Hi. I'm Dave at Clayton El. Our eggs are well past 450 ATU's. I'm concerned, especially as there was one that stuck his head out on the right day and then died without actually making out of the egg. That was a week ago yesterday. There has been nothing since?? In every way the tank is fine.

  7. Hi I'm at AJ McLellan and all of our eggs hatched our first week back from the holidays. They are looking like they will be fry soon. All alevin seem to be fine and thriving nestled into their redd.

  9. Hazelgrove - My fish are at the stage I find most difficult. Most look like their yolk sac has absorbed and some are sometimes swimming around, but most are still at the bottom of the tank. I take the cover off and on, just getting them used to the light. I am never sure though exactly when to start feeding. Usually I start too soon and most of the food falls to the bottom, but I guess that is alright as long as I clean the tank. Any advice?

  10. David Brankin - My salmon are growing slowly. The 5 degrees was really low 2,3,4,5, so I upped it to 6. I think I will up it to 7 as it still low 3-6 ish Anyway, no hatches ATU's 536. ???I The salmon appear healthy and I thought better late than early due to spring break. As usual my PH is always high 7.6 and each week I change 20L (5 gallons) which brings it to 7.4. I tested tape which is neutral at 7.0 It's weird. This was the case from the start. The only thing I can think of is the gravel but Kevin says many people get the gravel from Paul's. Could it be the tank?? The caulking??? I have to work harder to keep them healthy but do have a good track record. Thanks, Jacquie

Our ATUs hit 544 today and we finally had our first hatch!! I'm wondering if the ATUs were off? Did they maybe tell us the wrong number to start? I seem to recall getting them at more around the 250 area last year but this year I was told 324 to start. If it was 100 ATU off then my 544 would be just about right. Anyhoo, I'm so glad that the hatch started today at school right before the weekend so that the students got to see the first one out.

  12. Today (Monday) we had a terrible morning. About 15 of our fry died!!! We do not know why. Our Ph and ammonia levels are normal. Our water is still 8°C. We have been feeding them for the last two weeks and today we were starting the krill. What happened? It was awful to see them at the bottom of the tank. If you have any input please write to us. We will be going to Little Campbell Fish Hatchery March 6.

My eggs have finally started to hatch! Yesterday, I was concerned about the eggs not hatching and so reading people's comments on the Salmon Site , I decided to increase the temperature of my tank by two degrees. Should I lower it again to about 4/5 or leave it at 7?

Ok, we now have all but three of our eggs hatch. We are at 569 ATUs and our tank is still set at 5 degrees. I'm wondering if I should now raise it up a couple of degrees (7 or 8)?
